Our second destination on our (mostly) culinary journey around the world is the beautiful Scandinavian country of Sweden!

Sweden is also a constitutional monarchy, but is ruled by a prime minister and parliament, sitting in the capital Stockholm. Stockholm is spread over 14 islands, also known as “Venice of the North” due to its many canals, waterways and bridges connecting the different islands.

The national language is Swedish, a North Germanic language, which is close to Norwegian and Danish, but 5% of the Swedish population actually speaks Finnish. In the north of the country lies part of the area that the Sami people inhabit (their territory also stretches into Norway, Finland and Russia), a indigenous Finno-Ugric people. They also have their own language, or rather group of languages, which also are called Sami.

Sweden’s climate is temperate, but has three different climate zones, the south oceanic, the middle human continental and the north subarctic, but is overall drier than most other countries.

The cuisine of Sweden also sees a big difference between the north and the south. In the north, dishes are influenced a lot more by traditional Sweden, with lots of reindeer and other game meat being used, while the south sees more fish, traditional meats and fresh vegetables.
